Insulation acts as a barrier to heat loss and heat gain, particularly in roofs and ceilings, walls and floors. In many homes insulation is the most practical and cost effective way to make a house more energy efficient, keeping it cooler in summer and warmer in winter and saving up to 40 per cent in heating and cooling bills. Half of the energy we use to heat or cool our homes can simply leak out without insulation.

Ceilings and roofs
Insulating the roof or ceiling can save up to 45 percent of your heating and cooling energy. Verandah roofs should also be insulated, as this affects the space below and the temperature inside.

Walls
Insulating the walls can prevent up to 15 percent of the heating energy in the winter months.

Floors
Insulating the floor can save up to 5 percent of your winter heat energy.

Waterpipes
Water pipes can insulated to reduce heat losses.

There are two main types of insulation that Simplee use for ceilings, walls and floors.

Bulk insulation (usally batts, rolls or boards)
This acts as a barrier to heat flow, keeping the heat out in the warmer months and  in during the cooler months. These insulation materials are made from materials like glass wool, polyester, wool or recycled paper.

Reflective insulation (foil, rolls or batts)
This type of insulation helps to keep the heat out in the summer by reflecting the radiant heat. These insulation materials are generally made from shiny aluminium foil laminated onto paper or plastic.

Hybrid insulation
Some insulation products are available that combine features of both bulk and reflective insulation.

The R-value describes the insulation’s ability to resist heat flow (prevent heat leaking in or out. The higher the R-value, the better it insulates. Insulation products with the same R-value will provide the same level of insulation if installed correctly. The required R-value required depends on your building and climate zone.
